pLAN9 released new album from the band Bomb the Music Industry titled “Vacation”. Formed by Jeff Rosenstock as a bedroom project reaction to the serious business issues of his former band, Bomb The Music Industry! was never supposed to sell over 10,000 records or tour the world. They weren’t supposed to headline festivals or drove their van over 300,000 miles either. Vacation, their sixth full-length, will be a split release from Brooklyn indie label Ernest Jenning Record Co. as well as the first release through the band’s own label Really Records. A further step away from the band’s entrenched punk origins, Vacation will resonate with fans of bands like Titus Andronicus or the Thermals, ethically punk band who take the genre and run in a totally new direction with it. It’s punk for people who love Merge Records today as much as they loved Fat Wreck Chords in high school.

With the late 80s/early 90s shoegazing sound now impossibly de rigueur, this Swansea sextet have recruited Spacemen 3’s Pete Kember to help recreate the influential Rugby’s band’s sound as accurately as a reproduction artist might whack off a moody Mona Lisa. Opener Sunset’s rush of angry chords is eerily similar to Spacemen classic Revolution Where Spacemen 3 were Walkin’ With Jesus, WNS frontman Daniel Henley can’t stop himself dropping in a reference to “me and the Devil, walkin’ side by side”. At times, it all feels so fiendishly counterfeit that you expect a visit from the sonic police, but the drones and psychedelic melodies are impeccably well done, and at times sublime. No Place to Hide conjures up a particularly translucent, opiate clam, while (In Both) Dreams and Ecstasies edges into more glacial Fripp and Eno territory. Actual originality is hard to pin down, though the Krautrocky Fire in the Still Sea introduces the not so psychedelic sound of Swansea’s seagulls.

Tom Demac’s first solo outing on Liebe Detail simultaneously explores both the dark and light sides of house music, excelling in both directions. On “Ten from Seventeen,” the dark is represented by the twisted bass and menacing male vocal, while flashes of light come courtesy of a few touchingly simple piano chords that lighten the mood considerably. The process is flipped on “This Is What I Want”; a gently rolling bassline and soulful vocal utterances are pinned down by mechanical growls and a harsh, snaking synth that spits acidic venom over anything that comes within range. A powerful analogue bassline dominates Soulphiction’s reimagining of “Ten from Seventeen,” and although there’s a nicely cut-up piano sample that serves as a momentary distraction, the low-end is hard to ignore and where the attention happily remains. Iron Curtis caresses a little more subtlety from his remix of the same track, teasingly his typically retro-sounding synths over firm drums with spacey, continually evolving results. The joyful organ that seeps into the mix mid-break perfectly serves as the delicious, creamy topping on what is an extremely strong EP.
