Detroit 1-8-7 is a fresh addition to a stale, overdone genre. I was skeptical before watching the show because it looked like another crime show and though it is another crime show, it definitely offers a different perspective and the show itself has a great voice. Anyone who watches it will be pleasantly surprised, too bad this is the only one season. What does it take to be a detective on America’s most dangerous streets? Get ready to be part of the action when a documentary crew rolls with some of Detroit’s finest, offering an insider’s glimpse behind the curtain of a Homicide Unit. The cameras unearth the crisis and revelation, heartbreak and heroism of these inner city cops—moments of raw exposure when they address us directly, as well as private moments when they forget they’re being filmed. There’s the damaged but driven Detective Louis Fitch, a wily homicide vet who is the most respected—and most misunderstood—man in the division; Detective Damon Washington, Fitch’s new partner, who finds the first day on the job is a trial by fire, complicated by the imminent birth of his first child; Detective Ariana Sanchez, sexy, edgy and beautiful, who has emerged from a rough background to become a rising star in the department.

The investigation into what appears to be a simple robbery-homicide of a Brush Park squatter leads Fitch, Washington, Longford and Majahan to uncover something much more complex. Meanwhile, Longford and Mahajan reopen a five-year-old cold case when the victim’s mother brings in new evidence. Boxing legend and Detroit native Thomas “Hitman” Hearns guest stars as himself.

The slaying of a college coed leads to an “all-hands-on-deck” case with multiple suspects, including a rival of Stone’s from his undercover days, Pup Clemmons (J.D. Williams); a Pakistani drug runner; a college professor; and a classmate from a politically connected family. In other events, Sanchez searches for the truth about Stone’s junkie ex-girlfriend (Kristina Apgar), who’s trying to reignite her relationship with him.

In other events, the murder at a Greek restaurant of a prominent defense attorney’s 21-year-old son appears to be an inside job.

Plot - Washington and Fitch investigate a double homicide at a pharmacy; Longford and Mahajan try to track down the killer of an attorney who had many enemies; the investigations culminate in a high-speed pursuit.

Longford, Mahajan, Stone and Sanchez investigate the slaying of a wealthy, retired auto industry executive in his palatial home; Fitch, Washington and Lt. Mason comfort the family of an 11-year-old boy who was killed by a drive-by shooter.

Lost Child/Murder 101 - When a young woman with a two-year old hidden in the back of her SUV is shot multiple times the detectives are furious. Possibilities include her ex-husband and illegalities with the foster care system. Longford and Mahajan look into the homicide of a college janitor which looks to be the “perfect murder” until the detectives uncover an unusual motive.

Road to Nowhere - Fitch is the main suspect when philanthropist Henry Malloy is shot. Special Agent Jess Harkins is assigned to investigate his involvement which includes interrogating the other squad members. In the meantime, Fitch and Washington are assigned a bizarre case involving three murder victims on a public bus, thousands of dollars and a missing bus driver. As they try to track the money they discover a kidnapping gone wrong.

In the case of she’s really a he, Longford and Mahajan investigate the bludgeoning death of a prominent drag queen. As they delve into the victim’s life they must sort through ardent admirers and jealous rival divas. In a different case, an ex-con confesses to killing rival gang members in self defense leaving Fitch and Washington to uncover what the shooter is hiding. Stone’s love life gets complicated when a woman from his past returns.

While attending Longford’s retirement party, the squad is shocked to learn that assistant prosecutor Alice Williams was murdered in the courthouse parking garage, and the tragedy hits Lt. Mason hard.
