Ever since Orson Welles inspired panic with his spoof radio broadcast, the War of the Worlds has been ripe for mischief. So it is with this mockumentary, which looks back on a First World War fought between planets, rather than countries. In many ways it’s a parody of the History Channel’s usual programming: far too long and with suspect historical accuracy. There are some smart updates to HG Wells’s classic and the CGI is impressive, although repeated endlessly. Some might object to alien tripods stomping through real footage from the First World War. Yet, in the best tradition of the genre, it uses sci-fi as an allegory for self-sustaining warfare. On some level, a Martian invasion makes more sense than a generation of humans slaughtering itself in the mud.

Inside their house, Donkey, Pinocchio, The Three Little Pigs, Wolf and Gingy fail to scare the ogres, and Shrek claims that nothing can scare an ogre. To prove him wrong, Donkey proposes a challenge to see who can tell the scariest story, but Shrek amps it up by choosing to hold their contest in Lord Farquaad’s abandoned castle. Gingy starts first with a story about his girlfriend dumping him and asking the muffin man for a new girlfriend, made with loads of sugar. Gingy becomes happy with her but ends up becoming freaked out of all her love for him. After running away and pushing her in a big container of batter, he finally becomes free of her and decides to go home, but ends up being eaten by loads of his love.

Created by Seth Green and Matt Senreich, Robot Chicken is a festival of old-school stop motion animation and fast-paced satire. Action figures are used to great effect to spoof tv, movies, music and celebrities. From the twisted minds of Seth and Matt ,the idea came up when Matt Seinrech interviewed Seth Green for ‘Toyfare’ magazine. Matt had a regular feature titled ‘Twisted Toyfare Theater’ in which Seth was a fan and eventually the idea for Robot Chicken came about after Seth appeared on ‘Late Night with Conan O’Brien’. The name for the show kept changing and changing due to copyright and legal reasons until eventually they came upon the dish ‘ Robot Chicken ‘ in a local Chinese restaurant. The dish was described as’ Tender chunks of chicken breast fried in a light batter and cooked in a sweet and pungent sauce’. While Matt and Seth were working on the idea a Sony website heard about the idea and approached the two about creating an internet only series. In 2001 ‘Sweet J Presents’ was launched. This eventually became ‘Robot Chicken’ , named precisely after the dish.
